First, why are your teeth discoloured
This determines whether whitening will help, so it is where the appointment starts.
Surface staining
comes from what passes over your teeth. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola and tobacco are the usual contributors. This type of discolouration generally responds well, and a professional clean sometimes removes more of it than people expect before any whitening is needed.
Age related change
is structural. Enamel thins gradually over decades and the dentine underneath, which is naturally more yellow, shows through more. Whitening can help, though the extent varies.
Internal discolouration
sits within the tooth. Causes include trauma to a single tooth, certain antibiotics taken during childhood such as tetracycline, and excessive fluoride during tooth development. This type responds less predictably, and a single dark tooth following an old injury usually needs a different approach entirely.
Existing dental work
does not whiten at all. Crowns, veneers, bridges and tooth coloured fillings keep their original shade permanently. If you have restorations on your front teeth, whitening the surrounding natural teeth can leave them looking obviously darker, which may mean replacing them afterwards to match. We will tell you before you start if this applies to you.
The options
In chair whitening.
A higher concentration gel applied by the dentist in a single appointment of roughly 60 to 90 minutes, with the gums protected throughout. The advantage is speed. Most of the change happens the same day.
Take home whitening.
Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, used with a lower concentration gel over one to two weeks at home. It takes longer, but the gradual approach often means less sensitivity, and you keep the trays for future top-ups.
Both together.
In chair to get most of the way, then take home trays for maintenance. This is a common combination for patients wanting a change ahead of a specific event, with maintenance built in afterwards.
Which suits you depends on your timeframe, your sensitivity history and your budget. We will talk it through rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
On sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity to cold is the most common side effect of whitening. It typically settles within a few days.
Some people experience it more than others, and if you already have sensitive teeth you are more likely to notice it. This is manageable. We can adjust concentration, shorten wear time, use a desensitising toothpaste in the lead up, or recommend the take home approach for a gentler pace.

Why not the supermarket kit
Over the counter whitening products are legally limited to much lower concentrations of active ingredient than professional treatment, which is why the results are usually modest.
The bigger issue is the fit. One size trays leak gel onto the gums, which is uncomfortable and gives an uneven result. Custom trays hold the gel against the teeth and away from the soft tissue.
There is also the assessment. A dentist checks for decay, cracks and gum problems first. Whitening over untreated decay is uncomfortable and, in the case of a cracked tooth, can push the material somewhere it should not go.
How long the results last
Anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending largely on what you consume and whether you smoke.
Teeth do gradually pick up staining again. That is normal and not a sign anything went wrong. Take home trays make top-ups straightforward, and a regular professional clean helps.
Results vary between individuals, and we cannot tell you in advance exactly how many shades your teeth will lift.
