A veneer is a thin custom made shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape, size or apparent position of that tooth without altering what sits behind it.
Veneers can produce a significant change. They are also, in most cases, permanent, because preparing a tooth to receive one usually involves removing a layer of enamel that does not grow back. Once a tooth has been prepared, it will need a veneer or a crown on it from that point forward.
That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to make the decision carefully, which is how we approach it at 13 Cronulla Street.

What veneers are good at
Colour that whitening will not shift.
Internal discolouration from an old injury, tetracycline staining or fluorosis often does not respond well to bleaching. A veneer covers it rather than trying to change it.
Chips and worn edges.
Particularly on the front teeth, where wear becomes visible.
Small gaps.
Veneers can close minor spacing between the front teeth.
Teeth that are misshapen or undersized.
Small lateral incisors are a common example.
Minor rotation or overlap.
Veneers can make slightly out of line teeth read as straight. There are limits to this, and where the misalignment is more than minor, orthodontic treatment gives a better and more conservative result. We will say so if that is the case.
What veneers cannot do
They do not fix bite problems, and they do not treat gum disease or decay. Both of those have to be dealt with first.
They do not suit teeth with very little remaining enamel to bond to, or teeth that have already had extensive restoration, where a crown is usually the more appropriate treatment.
And they will not last forever. Well made and well cared for veneers commonly serve for many years, but they can chip, the bond can fail, and the gum margin can recede over time to reveal the join. At some point they will need replacing.
Porcelain or composite
Porcelain veneers
are made in a dental laboratory from impressions or a digital scan, then bonded on at a second appointment. They resist staining well, reflect light in a way that closely mimics natural enamel, and generally last longer. They cost more and require at least two visits.
Composite veneers
are built up directly on the tooth by the dentist in a single appointment. They cost considerably less, involve less or sometimes no enamel removal, and can be repaired easily. They are more prone to staining and chipping, and will need maintenance sooner.
Neither is the correct answer in every case. Composite is often the sensible starting point for a younger patient or for someone who wants to see how a change looks before committing to porcelain.
Consider the conservative options first
Before recommending veneers we will go through what else could achieve what you are after.
Whitening for colour. Composite bonding for a single chip or a small gap. Enamel reshaping for an uneven edge. Orthodontic treatment for alignment. Any of these may deliver what you want with less permanent alteration to the tooth.
If veneers really are the right answer, we will explain why the alternatives fall short in your particular case.
What the process involves
Consultation and planning.
We discuss what you want to change, examine the health of the teeth and gums, take photographs and often a set of impressions. Any decay or gum disease is treated first.
Design.
For multiple veneers we plan the shape, length and shade together. A trial or mock-up stage is often possible, letting you see and comment on a proposed result before anything permanent happens.
Preparation.
A thin layer of enamel is removed under local anaesthetic. Temporary veneers are placed while the permanent ones are made.
Fitting.
The veneers are trialled for fit and appearance, adjusted, and bonded in place. Your bite is checked and refined.
Looking after them
Brush and floss as normal. Veneers do not decay, but the tooth underneath and the gum around it certainly can.
Do not use your front teeth to open packaging or bite hard objects. If you grind or clench at night, a night guard is strongly advised, since grinding forces are a common cause of veneer failure.
Keep up regular check-ups so the margins and bond can be monitored.
