Starting with the least invasive option
There is a hierarchy in cosmetic dentistry, and it runs from reversible to permanent.
Whitening changes nothing structurally. Bonding adds material without removing much, if any. Reshaping removes a very small amount of enamel. Veneers require permanent preparation of the tooth. Crowns involve more again.
Our approach is to begin at the conservative end and only move up when there is a reason to.
A patient convinced they need eight veneers sometimes needs whitening and the reshaping of one edge. Someone unhappy with a gap may be a candidate for bonding rather than porcelain. Not always. But it is worth establishing before committing to work that cannot be undone.
We will always tell you what the more conservative option would achieve, even where it earns the practice less.
What we offer
Teeth whitening.
In chair and take home options. The most common starting point, and often enough on its own. Worth knowing before you begin: whitening lifts natural tooth structure but does not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or fillings, which can leave older restorations looking noticeably darker afterwards.
Dental veneers.
Thin custom shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth, used to change shape, colour, spacing or apparent alignment. Effective, and a genuine commitment, since preparing a tooth for a veneer usually alters it permanently.
Composite bonding.
Tooth coloured material applied directly to repair a chip, close a small gap or reshape an edge. Usually completed in one appointment, considerably less expensive than porcelain, and more conservative. It does not last as long and is more prone to staining over time.
Tooth reshaping.
Removing a very small amount of enamel to soften an uneven edge or a pointed corner. Quick, and surprisingly effective for a small change.
Crowns for cosmetic and structural reasons.
Where a tooth is both damaged and visible, a crown addresses appearance and function together.
Replacing old restorations.
Silver amalgam fillings and ageing composites that have discoloured can be replaced with modern tooth coloured materials.
What a consultation involves
A cosmetic consultation is a conversation, not a sales appointment.
We ask what specifically bothers you, which is more useful than a general wish for a better smile. A photograph you like is genuinely helpful, as is one of yourself from a period you were happier with.
We examine the underlying health of the teeth and gums. Cosmetic work sits on top of dental health, not instead of it. Active decay or untreated gum disease has to be addressed first, because a veneer over an unhealthy foundation is a short lived veneer.
We set out the options, from most conservative to most involved, with the trade-offs of each. Costs, timeframes, longevity and maintenance are all discussed before you decide anything.
Then you go away and think about it. There is no time pressure applied here, and no discount that expires if you do not book on the day.
On expectations
Cosmetic dentistry does have limits, and being clear about them beforehand avoids disappointment later.
Results vary between individuals. Teeth respond differently to whitening depending on the cause of the discolouration. Some corrections are constrained by the position of the underlying tooth. Occasionally the honest answer is that orthodontic treatment would achieve a better outcome than a cosmetic one, and we will say so.
