A GENTLER WAY TO BEGIN DENTAL CARE

Dental Anxiety in Cronulla

Does your body start to tense before you’ve even sat in the dental chair?

We’ve made an experience for you.

A different starting point

The Anxious Patient Experience™

A nervous-system-aware approach to dental care.

The heart of the experience

This is not about curing anxiety or pushing through it.

A young woman smiling and holding up a clear aligner

It’s about understanding why your body reacts.

It’s about learning practical ways to regulate that response.

It’s about creating a dental environment and care pathway that feels safe enough to attend, make decisions and receive treatment.

Anxiety may still be present. Success means it’s no longer the barrier that stops you accessing care.

If the thought of booking your dental appointment makes your heart race, this is for you.

Understanding the experience

What is The Anxious Patient Experience™?

The Anxious Patient Experience™ (APE) begins with a dedicated 70-minute Anxious New Patient Experience.

This first visit follows a consistent APE protocol and flow that is unique to the programme. Before you arrive, we learn about your anxiety, triggers, previous experiences, communication preferences and what helps you feel more comfortable and in control.

During your appointment, we take time to understand what helps you feel more at ease. We create a sense of predictability and control, communicate in the way that works best for you, and support you with practical ways to regulate your nervous system throughout your care.

Your visit may also include an examination, X-rays and other appropriate care (such as a clean) where you feel comfortable enough to proceed.

From there, you receive a personalised treatment plan and ongoing APE care pathway, so future treatment can be adapted around your individual needs, preferences and level of support.

The aim is not to promise that anxiety disappears or to ask you to push through it.

It is to help you understand your response, give you practical tools to regulate it, and create a consistent care pathway that helps anxiety become less of a barrier to receiving dental treatment.

What if your dental care started with understanding your anxiety first?

Then built an experience around what you need.

The nervous system

Dental anxiety often starts in the body.

Your nervous system is always checking whether you are safe. At the dentist, many things can tell it you are not:

  • Unfamiliar environments
  • Past experiences
  • Claustrophobia
  • Needles
  • Sounds and sensations
  • Embarrassment
  • Unpredictability

What it can feel like

When your body feels unsafe, you might notice:

  • A racing heart
  • Muscle tension
  • Changes in your breathing
  • Shaking
  • Nausea
  • Tears
  • Freezing
  • The urge to leave or cancel

This is not always a conscious choice. It is your body trying to protect you.

Our approach

We don’t ask you to ignore that response. We work with it.

Being told to “just relax” rarely helps. Instead, we help you understand what is happening and introduce practical, evidence-informed strategies drawn from established approaches to anxiety regulation.

Alongside greater predictability, control and personalised support, these tools can help you regulate your response and make accessing dental care feel more manageable.

Who is The Anxious Patient Experience™ for?

The Anxious Patient Experience™ is designed for people whose dental anxiety, fear or previous experiences make attending the dentist or receiving treatment more difficult.

You do not need to have severe dental phobia to benefit from the experience. You may simply notice that your heart races before an appointment, you feel tense in the waiting room, you avoid booking, feel embarrassed or overwhelmed, or wish dental care felt easier.

The Anxious Patient Experience™ is not intended as a standalone pathway for patients with severe dental phobia who are unable to tolerate dental care without significant pharmacological support.

For some patients, inhalation sedation, such as nitrous oxide, intravenous sedation, or referral for treatment under general anaesthetic may be more appropriate.

Our role is to help identify the level of support that is right for you rather than asking you to force yourself through an approach that may not be appropriate.

Imagine walking out of the dentist feeling proud of yourself. That feeling is possible.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS

Dental Anxiety and Nervous Patients in Cronulla

Been putting off the dentist? You are in a very large group, and we work differently for patients who find it difficult.

If you have been putting off a dental appointment, you are in a very large group.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid health care of any kind. For some it is mild reluctance. For others it is severe enough that they have not been to a dentist in a decade, and the thought of booking produces a physical reaction.

We are not going to tell you that is irrational, or that modern dentistry means there is nothing to worry about. Anxiety does not respond to being argued with. What it does respond to is control, predictability and time, and those are things a dental practice can actually provide.

Why the anxiety exists

Understanding where it comes from helps, because it points to what needs to be different.

A previous bad experience.

Usually the biggest factor. An injection that did not take. A dentist who continued when you signalled to stop. Being made to feel foolish. One appointment like that can shape the next twenty years.

Loss of control.

You are lying back, unable to speak, with someone working in a part of your body you cannot see. That is inherently vulnerable, and it accounts for a lot of what people describe as fear of pain.

Embarrassment.

A surprising number of people are not frightened of the treatment at all. They are frightened of being judged for the state of their teeth or the length of the gap since their last visit.

Fear of cost.

Not knowing what an appointment will lead to financially is its own kind of dread.

The sounds and smells.

Clinical environments carry strong associations, and the drill in particular is a trigger for many people.

How we work with nervous patients

Tell us when you book.

This is the single most useful thing you can do. When we know in advance, we schedule differently, plan a slower appointment and brief the team before you arrive. You will not have to explain yourself at the front desk.

Come in for a conversation first.

You can book an appointment where no clinical treatment happens at all. You sit in a normal chair, meet the dentist, look at the room, and talk about what has been difficult in the past. Some patients need two or three of these before an examination. That is a perfectly reasonable use of our time.

Agree a stop signal.

A raised hand means we stop. Not at a convenient point, immediately. This one arrangement resolves a great deal of anxiety, because the fear is usually about not being able to stop rather than about the procedure itself.

Know what is happening before it happens.

We describe each step before we do it. No unexpected sensations, no instruments appearing without warning. If you would rather not know the details, tell us and we will keep the narration minimal instead.

Break treatment into shorter appointments.

Twenty minutes at a time, several times, is often far more manageable than one long session, even though it takes more visits.

Bring what helps.

Headphones and your own music. Sunglasses against the light. A friend or family member in the room. Something to hold. None of this is unusual here.

No lectures. Ever.

If it has been fifteen years, we are interested in today. Nobody at this practice will comment on the gap or make you feel foolish for it. This is not a courtesy, it is the policy.

Managing discomfort

Local anaesthetic is very effective when given properly and given time to work. Rushing the numbing is a common cause of the bad experiences people carry with them, so we allow time and check before starting rather than assuming.

Topical numbing gel can be applied before an injection, so you do not feel the needle itself.

If you have had an injection fail in the past, tell us. There are technical reasons this happens and there are ways around it.

About the cost question

If the financial uncertainty is the anxious part, we handle that directly. You will get a written estimate before treatment begins, and we can prioritise what is genuinely urgent and stage the rest over time. Payment plans through DentiCare are available.

You are allowed to ask what something costs. It is a normal question.

Taking the first step

The hardest appointment is the one you book, not the one you attend. Most nervous patients report that the anticipation was worse than the visit.

If you would rather not phone, book online or email and note that you are anxious.

We are at 13 Cronulla Street, Cronulla, and we see nervous patients from across Cronulla, Woolooware, Burraneer, Greenhills Beach, Caringbah South, Taren Point, Kurnell and Bundeena.

Dr Lorna Gladwin

Creator of The Anxious Patient Experience™

Lorna created The Anxious Patient Experience™ after seeing how often anxiety, rather than the dentistry itself, becomes the biggest barrier to someone receiving care.

Her approach has always centred around understanding the person before the teeth: what makes them anxious, what helps them feel in control, how they prefer to communicate, and what can make treatment feel more manageable.

Originally from northern England, Lorna graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2019 and has worked across NHS hospitals, private practice and referral settings in both the UK and Sydney. She now practises in the Sutherland Shire, with particular interests in restorative dentistry and endodontics.

The Anxious Patient Experience™ brings together the way she has naturally approached anxious patients throughout her career into a structured pathway designed to help more people access dental care with greater understanding, control and confidence.

“You don’t have to be brave here. You can take it one gentle step at a time.”

Questions

Everything you might want to know before you begin.

Am I suitable for The Anxious Patient Experience™?

If your body tenses, your heart races or you avoid the dentist because of how it makes you feel, this was created for you. It may not be sufficient on its own for everyone. More severe dental phobia or complex cases may need additional support, which we will discuss with you.

What happens after I book?

Once your appointment is confirmed, we’ll send you your Anxious Patient Experience new patient information pack.

This will include your pre-appointment questionnaire, contact information, where to park, how to plan your day and everything you need to know before your visit - helping remove as much uncertainty as possible before you arrive.

The information you share also gives your dental team time to understand your anxiety, triggers and preferences and prepare your experience around you.

What if I haven’t been to the dentist for years?

You are not alone, and there is no judgement here. We start from where you are today.

What if I become overwhelmed or cry?

That’s okay. It’s a natural response, not something to apologise for. We pause, give you time and only continue when you are ready.

Do I have to have treatment at my first appointment?

No. Your first appointment is about understanding you and what you need. Any treatment is discussed and planned with you, at your pace.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring someone you trust.

Can I use headphones or choose what I watch or listen to?

Yes. We have sound-reducing headphones ready for APE patients, along with weighted blankets if these help you feel more comfortable.

We’ll also ask about your music and TV preferences before your appointment so the room can be prepared for you where possible.

Is sedation available?

Yes. Some patients find that additional support such as inhalation sedation, including nitrous oxide, or intravenous sedation makes dental care feel more manageable.

These options can be discussed with you where appropriate.

The aim is not to take support away from you. We also want to help you understand your anxiety and build practical ways to regulate your response, so you have more tools available to you when receiving dental care.

What happens after my first appointment?

We talk through what we learned together and agree on the next steps. You decide what happens next and when.

How much does it cost?

The New Patient Appointment is 70 minutes and costs $350. A $100 deposit is required to secure your booking.

What is the cancellation and deposit policy?

With 48 hours’ notice or more, your deposit can be transferred or refunded. With less than 48 hours’ notice or non-attendance, your deposit may be retained. If anxiety is making it hard to attend, please contact us rather than simply not attending.
